No. 7: The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Normally I don’t think of John McLaughlin as a “weird” guitarist, but rather as innovative, cutting edge, and ahead of the pack. Nevertheless, this electric etude I recently wrote on McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra for Premier Guitar magazine definitely qualifies as weird. It has odd meters, uncommon scales, an angular melody, displaced accents, and a solo played with reckless abandon.
