No. 15: Guest Lesson, Metal Counterpoint

On November 9, 2020 by Prester John

I’m delighted to post this special guest lesson from Baring Teeth guitarist Andrew Hawkins. In this lesson, Andrew breaks down an outrageously complex section of music from his composition “Dripping Sun” and demonstrates his take on electric, flatpick counterpoint.

I’m particularly happy to have a lesson in a radically different style from the music I regularly play. Andrew and Baring Teeth’s style of Metal is much more contemporary than my old school inclinations. (I grew up on the Heavy Metal of Judas Priest and Scorpions, followed by the Thrash of Metallica, Stormtroopers of Death, Zeotrope, et al. [all fantastic bands but none I would label as “weird”] and I have never recorded any music in the Metal idiom.) So, a big THANK YOU to Andrew for broadening the scope of Weird Guitar Lessons. Enjoy. – Shawn Persinger is Prester John
